TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tainan’s main reservoirs are benefiting from last year’s abundant rainfall as the region enters the traditional dry season.
The first rice irrigation for the Tsengwen-Wushantou Reservoir Irrigation Area is scheduled to begin on Jan. 31. In addition to supporting agriculture, water supplies for civilian and industrial use remain stable. However, the Tainan City Government is urging the public to maintain water conservation habits, according to CNA.
In a press release, the Tainan City Government stated that the combined storage capacity of the Tsengwen, Wushantou, and Nanhua reservoirs currently stands at 640 million tonnes.
Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) has worked with the central government in recent years to promote water resource projects that have stabilized reservoir levels in Tainan and neighboring Kaohsiung. For example, Tainan has three recycled water plants that provide up to 83,000 tonnes of water daily for high-tech industries, with plans to increase this to 110,000 tonnes by 2026.
Additionally, a desalination plant is in development, with the first phase expected to supply 100,000 tonnes of water daily. These initiatives aim to diversify water resources and enhance the resilience of southern Taiwan’s water supply.
Observation data from the Water Resources Agency shows that the Tsengwen and Wushantou reservoir systems have a combined storage capacity of 577.76 million tonnes, with a water storage rate of 99.06%. Meanwhile, the Nanhua Reservoir holds 77.79 million tonnes, with a water storage rate of 87.21%.
