TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan People's Party acting chair Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) announced his candidacy for the party chair on Tuesday, stressing the importance of sustaining a third-party presence in Taiwan’s political landscape.
Huang said his decision to run was influenced by a conversation with former TPP Chair Ko Wen-je (柯文哲), per CNA. He recalled how Ko focused on the party's future rather than his legal battles, inspiring Huang to step forward.
Huang also expressed concern about the erosion of Taiwanese democracy, which he attributed to the rise of an emerging Party-state.
“Ko once told me that while the TPP started with him, it cannot continue as a one-person party,” Huang wrote, vowing to uphold Ko’s vision. He outlined three key priorities for the party’s future:
- Expanding the TPP’s reach: Huang emphasized the need to continue Ko’s “big tent” approach, particularly by identifying and supporting new leaders for the 2026 mayoral elections.
- Strengthening grassroots identity: Huang stressed the importance of keeping the TPP rooted in its grassroots, holding powerful figures accountable, and remaining the voice of the people.
- Promoting practical governance: He also reiterated Ko’s commitment to reason, science, and practicality in shaping Taiwan’s future.
Former TPP Legislator Tsai Pi-ru (蔡壁如), another potential contender for the party chair, was asked Monday about her plans, per Up Media. Tsai indicated that her decision would depend on further discussions with Huang about the party's direction and future.
Tsai noted that, at present, the TPP’s top priority should be supporting Ko and preparing for the upcoming elections in 2026 and 2028. She also suggested that if Ko were to face what she described as political persecution, the party should actively rally public support to counter such challenges.
