TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taiwan embassy in Tuvalu has blasted China for launching a disinformation campaign to damage Taiwan-Tuvalu ties.
China Global Television Network recently released two videos of Tuvaluans reiterating false Chinese rhetoric about Taiwan and its relations with Tuvalu, CNA reported.
In one video, a teacher claimed that UN Resolution 2758 designates Taiwan as part of China, which is a consensus of the international community. He said that Taiwan-Tuvalu diplomatic relations are primarily symbolic, offering no substantial economic or social benefits.
Another video featured a student praising China, saying that Chinese products are high-quality and affordable, particularly electronics like smartphones. The student also commended China’s construction technology and contributions to addressing climate change.
The Taiwan embassy said it respects freedom of speech but opposes “China’s manipulation of disinformation to conduct cognitive warfare” and its attempts to “weaken democratic values.”
China has ramped up efforts to poach Taiwan’s Pacific Island allies. So far, Kiribati, Solomon Islands, and Nauru have switched recognition to Beijing over the past six years. In August, Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr. said that China was pressuring him to break ties with Taiwan in exchange for Chinese tourists.
Lai Ching-te embarked on a Pacific Island tour in November to promote sustainable democracy and cooperation with its remaining regional allies, Palau, Tuvalu, and the Marshall Islands. Lai said at the time that he looked forward to “discovering more opportunities for cooperation and both deepening and elevating our diplomatic relations with all three allies.”
