TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council called for cross-strait dialogue without preconditions after China said it was willing to talk under the framework of the “1992 consensus.”
China's Taiwan Affairs Office said it does not oppose resuming consultations between the two sides but it would need to adhere to the “one China” principle, Liberty Times reported. TAO Spokesperson Chen Bin-hua (陳斌華) accused the DPP administration of halting Taiwanese group tours to China and being unwilling to lift the ban.
In response, MAC said Taiwan welcomes Chinese tourists and maintains an open stance. However, it firmly rejects politically motivated conditions set by Beijing.
MAC said that China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism has not permitted group tours to Taiwan. It denied receiving any applications from Chinese tour groups mentioned by TAO.
The council pointed out that it has been a month since China claimed to be considering resuming group tours to Taiwan. Taiwan's position on welcoming Chinese tours has not changed, it said.
