TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Computer brand Acer Inc. is localizing its business as a precaution to counter tariffs expected from the new Trump administration, Chair Jason Chen (陳俊聖) said Wednesday.
He described the inauguration of Donald Trump scheduled for Jan. 20 as one of the key factors of unpredictability in 2025, per CNA. While he was expected to impose tariffs, they would vary according to the country, allowing for corporations to diversify to develop local businesses, Chen said.
Acer has already rearranged its supply chains by emphasizing production in the United States, Brazil, India, Indonesia, and Kazakhstan, he said. In the face of uncertainty, the company needed to boost its resilience, according to Chen.
The days of free trade being really “free” might be over, he added, implying that there would be a cost to conduct international trade.
Asked about this week’s visit to Taiwan by Nvidia Corporation CEO Jensen Huang (黃仁勳), Chen said he was happy to exchange views with prominent entrepreneurs. Acer and Nvidia cooperated on several levels, including the production of game computers, he said.
