TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taipei Flower Market in Neihu District will extend its operations for 108 continuous hours from Jan. 24 to noon on Jan. 28, CNA reported on Wednesday.
The market typically operates from 4 a.m. to noon, Monday through Saturday. However, from Wednesday for a week, the market will remain open until 3 p.m. daily.
The market is expected to close for a holiday break after noon on Jan. 28 and will resume operations on Feb. 3.
The Agriculture and Food Agency said from Jan. 8 to Tuesday, approximately 70,000 bundles of flowers were supplied daily nationwide. From Jan. 24 to Jan. 28, the daily supply is expected to increase to around 190,000 bundles.
The agency said that lily flowers are expected to be in high demand during the Lunar New Year, accounting for approximately 30% of the flower supply. However, due to typhoons and low temperatures, the lily harvest has decreased by 20% to 30% compared to the same period last year.
A bundle of five lilies costs around NT$210 (US$6.50). However, prices are expected to rise to NT$300 per bundle next week.
The agency added that eustoma and chrysanthemums are popular during the Spring Festival. Eustoma is priced at NT$197 for 10 stems, while chrysanthemums are available for NT$100 to NT$120 per 10 stems, remaining consistent with last year's prices.
According to Taipei Flowers Auction Company, the market is set to partner with the Nantou County Government again this year. From Jan. 24 to Jan. 27, the market will sell agricultural products from Nantou.
