TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Former Kaohsiung Bureau of Cultural Affairs Director Yin Li (尹立) and Taiwan Statebuilding Party Kaohsiung City Councilor Chang Bo-yang (張博洋) on Thursday announced a rally against the KMT-TPP coalition.
The pair called on Kaohsiung residents to voice their concerns and prevent the blue-white coalition from undermining Taiwan’s democratic system through legislative means, CNA reported.
The “Defend the nation, resist the blue-white coalition” protest is slated for Jan. 23 at Kaohsiung’s Sanmin Park at 6:30 p.m. Blue and white refer to the KMT and TPP, respectively. The event aims to mobilize the public to safeguard Taiwan’s democratic constitution and the nation’s development.
Chang said recent chaos in the Legislative Yuan, including reckless budget cuts and amendments, poses a crisis of governance. He added that Kaohsiung, as a symbol of Taiwan’s democracy, should take the lead in countering the united political parties.
He said he hoped the rally would spark a movement that would spread to other cities and counties.
Yin also criticized the blue-white coalition for attempting to raise the threshold for election, suppress recall rights and push a law that he claimed strips citizens of the right to constitutional interpretation.
