TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Army on Friday became the first branch of the military to open a drone training center in Tainan.
Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) and Defense Minister Wellington Koo (顧立雄) attended the Neijiao base ceremony, the Liberty Times reported. The military has identified uncrewed aerial vehicles as an important development goal in the defense of Taiwan.
During Friday’s ceremony, the Army displayed drones simulating reconnaissance and attack missions. The center will train teaching staff and officers in the operation, repair, and development of UAVs.
President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) wants the military to follow the international development of new technologies that can benefit national security, the vice president said. Drones and AI symbolize the new technology, according to Hsiao.
The Ministry of National Defense is also involved in the development of uncrewed submarines and stealth surface vessels.
