TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A Lunar New Year event at Taipei Main Station providing meals to homeless individuals took on a colorful twist this year with a performance by drag queens.
The NGO Do You A Flavor (人生百味), which has hosted this annual activity since 2015, organized 200 volunteers on Friday and Saturday to distribute 500 free meals to homeless people around Taipei Main Station, according to CNA.
In addition to meals, the event offered free haircuts, with a new addition this year: a performance by five drag queens. The queens encouraged attendees to spread love through singing and dancing.
One of the performers, Hana Boo Boo, told reporters that drag queens, as part of a marginalized group, can empathize with others who face societal challenges. She emphasized their ability to use their platforms to raise visibility and foster solidarity among diverse communities.
Volunteer Jacky Chou (周雨時) and his wife prepared 20 servings of fried rice and shrimp to distribute. They brought their 5-year-old son to participate, teaching him the value of equality.
Event leader A-Yong Chu (朱剛勇) highlighted the contributions of migrant workers, who in some cases volunteered on their day off to help distribute meals.
