TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A magnitude 6.4 earthquake occurred in southwest Taiwan at 12:17 a.m. on Tuesday, according to the Central Weather Administration.
As of publication, no injuries or damage from the earthquake were reported. Taiwan uses an intensity scale of 1 to 7 to gauge the degree to which a quake is felt at a specific location.
The quake’s intensity registered a 6 in Chiayi County and 5 in Tainan and Kaohsiung. An intensity level of 4 was reported in Chiayi, Yunlin County, Taitung County, Nantou County, Pingtung County, Hualien County, Changhua County, Taichung, and Penghu County.
A level 3 intensity was recorded in Miaoli County, Yilan County, and Hsinchu County. An intensity level of 2 was measured in Hsinchu, Taoyuan, New Taipei, and Taipei.
A level 1 intensity was detected in Keelung and Lienchiang County.
The CWA said its epicenter was 37.9 km southeast of Chiayi County Hall with a 9.7 km focal depth.
At 12:21 a.m., a magnitude 4.3 earthquake occurred 42 km east-northeast of Tainan City Hall. At 12:24 a.m., a magnitude 4.2 quake was recorded 42.9 km east-northeast of Tainan City Hall.
