TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Mainland Affairs Council said three people's Taiwan ID cards were canceled on Thursday after it found they also held Chinese IDs.
MAC Spokesperson Liang Wen-chieh (梁文傑) said authorities canceled the ID cards of Li Dongxian (李東憲), Su Shien (蘇士恩), and one other person, per UDN. Liang said Li and Su were identified in a video by Taiwanese YouTubers in December though the third person was not, so they will not be named.
Li held up a Chinese flag at a Taekwondo competition in South Korea in 2023. Mirror Media reported at the time the Tainan-born athlete had joined the Chinese Communist Party that year and rarely returned to Taiwan.
Liang said the council had received reports that 10 others held both Taiwan and Chinese IDs and all are under investigation. He said if someone in this situation loses their Taiwan ID they will be treated as Chinese citizens, who must follow different procedures to enter Taiwan and do not have access to the National Health Insurance.
One other person’s Taiwan household registration was canceled last week for possessing a Chinese ID. The cancellation was announced by the interior ministry but it did not say if it was related to the YouTube video exposing Li and Su.
