TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan should be worried because more than 85% of national security cases involved military or police personnel, the Mainland Affairs Council said Thursday.
Spokesperson Liang Wen-chieh (梁文傑) specifically named the case of retired Army Lieutenant General Kao An-kuo (高安國), indicted Monday for forming a group which would actively help China during an invasion of Taiwan. Most other cases involving serving or retired officers focused on collecting confidential defense information and passing it on to China.
Liang said he hoped the courts would treat those cases seriously as it was often difficult to find the necessary evidence, per CNA. Beijing actively plans and organizes the recruitment and formation of spy rings, he warned.
In Kao’s case, the retired general made plans to attack and overthrow Taiwan’s government in sync with a Chinese invasion. The group also received NT$9.62 million (US$294,500) in illegal funding, according to prosecutors.
