TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A magnitude 5.3 earthquake rattled south Taiwan just before 7:20 p.m. on Friday.
The Central Weather Administration reported the earthquake struck 40 kilometers east-northeast of Tainan City Hall at a depth of 11.7 km. It was felt most strongly in parts of Tainan, Kaohsiung, Chiayi, and Yunlin where it registered 4 on the intensity scale.
Taiwan uses a scale of 1 to 7 to gauge an earthquake's intensity. Mild shaking was also felt in Taipei though the administration did not report this.
The administration also recorded a magnitude 4 earthquake in Tainan at around 5:15 p.m. with an intensity of 3. It reported that the quake was felt as far north as Taichung.
No injuries from either earthquake were reported as of press time.
The shakes follow a magnitude 6.4 earthquake that struck Tainan just after midnight Tuesday morning and scores of aftershocks. The quake injured at least 26 people and caused evacuations.
