TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A shooting at a beverage wholesale store in Hsinchu's Zhudong Township on Friday afternoon left one person dead and five injured.
Police said five suspects armed with knives and guns carried out the attack in under five minutes. Surveillance footage has been retrieved, and authorities have identified a vehicle linked to the suspects, per CNA.
Criminal Investigation Bureau Commissioner Chou Yu-wei (周幼偉) said the evidence suggests the incident was a revenge attack. Details about the individuals involved are still being verified.
Sources told CNA that the site of the incident is a known gathering spot for members of the San Huan Gang, a gang based in Zhudong. The deceased was identified as one of the gang's key leaders, and the attack is suspected to be linked to disputes over profit distribution.
Police are gathering evidence from the scene, reviewing surveillance footage from nearby areas, and coordinating with Hsinchu’s criminal investigation units to expedite the case.
Nearby residents reported that around 5 p.m., a white sedan arrived at the store, and a group of men exited the car and rushed to the second floor. Multiple gunshots were heard shortly after, and the group returned to the car and fled the scene.
Emergency responders reported six casualties. A 40-year-old man, surnamed Liu (劉), showed no vital signs at the scene and was pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital.
The remaining five victims had gunshot and knife wounds, with one in critical condition.
