TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – With a post-pandemic record number of 157,000 passengers reported Saturday, people fulfilling their substitute military service helped out with security checks at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.
With the nine-day Lunar New Year holiday starting Saturday, the country’s main gateway saw 76,000 travelers leaving the country, UDN reported. Terminal One accounted for 40,000 of those, setting a new record.
In order to help maintain a reasonable flow of passengers through security checks, the Ministry of Interior mobilized 36 people to assist the Aviation Police Bureau and the National Immigration Agency, per CNA.
The new assistants had all obtained basic first-aid licenses and completed a course on how to do their work at the airport, according to the ministry. Disaster relief and epidemic prevention formed part of their training, and they also know foreign languages.
The ministry reminded the conscripts to project a positive attitude and make the passage through the airport a comfortable experience for the travelers. They will be on post until Feb. 14, well after the end of the Jan. 25-Feb. 2 holidays.
