TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A new activist group, backed by United Microelectronics Corporation founder Robert Tsao (曹興誠), announced Saturday it will continue its recall campaign against Kuomintang (KMT) lawmakers through the Lunar New Year holidays.
The group, called the Taiwan Anti-Communist Volunteers Alliance, said it plans to file the required documents with the Central Election Commission (CEC) shortly after the holiday concludes on Feb. 2, per CNA. The campaign targets the KMT for allegedly forcing measures through the Legislative Yuan that restrict the public's ability to organize recalls.
The alliance, drawing from prior recall campaign experience, is offering a platform for volunteers across the nation. Activists said their efforts were further fueled by the KMT’s collaboration with the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) to cut the central government’s 2025 budget, a move the alliance claims has intensified public resentment.
The Lunar New Year holidays provide a unique opportunity to gather signatures, as many Taiwanese travel to their hometowns for family reunions, allowing activists to engage with a broader audience.
