TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s Representative to Sweden, Clement Gu (谷瑞生), criticized China’s misinterpretation of UN Resolution 2758 to claim control over Taiwan and block it from joining global organizations.
The resolution does not grant China the right to represent Taiwan in the UN system, nor does it mention sovereignty, Gu said in an opinion article published on Saturday. He pointed out that Beijing is conflating it with its “one China” principle and convincing other nations to accept it, which is the primary reason for Taiwan’s “unfair and unjust exclusion from the UN system.”
The US and many European countries have rejected China’s misuse of the resolution, Gu said. Former US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said China is falsely portraying Taiwan's status as illegitimate and attempting to suppress it politically.
Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard acknowledged that the resolution “does not address the question of whether Taiwanese representatives could participate in international contexts in other ways.”
Taiwan can contribute to the world, Gu said. However, Taiwan’s exclusion from the UN “undermines the important work being done by the UN and its related bodies.”
The representative called on like-minded nations to “stop China's legal warfare” and counter expanding authoritarianism based on shared values.
