TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The New Taipei Fire Department reminded the public to take precautions on Tuesday as a cold front brings low temperatures to Taiwan.
The front is expected to weaken by Thursday. A weather front passing through on Saturday will bring more variable conditions, per UDN.
Residents are advised to dress warmly and engage in regular healthy activities. Risks such as overeating, drinking alcohol before bathing, and extreme mood swings should be avoided, CNA reported.
The warning follows reports of 13 people suffering from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) due to medical causes between Monday morning and 8 a.m. Tuesday. Despite resuscitation efforts, 11 of the individuals died.
According to the New Taipei Fire Department, six people experienced OHCA and were sent to the hospital between Monday morning and midnight, with one survivor. From midnight until 8 a.m. on Tuesday, seven more individuals suffered from OHCA, with one surviving.
While the causes of the OHCA incidents are not necessarily related to the drop in temperature, authorities are urging residents to stay warm. From Wednesday to Thursday morning, Taiwan will continue to experience the effects of the cold front.
The coldest period will occur from Wednesday night to 9 a.m. Thursday, with temperatures expected to drop to 8 to 10 C. In open plains, mountainous inland areas and hills, temperatures could dip as low as 6 to 8 C.
Dry air will dominate, keeping conditions clear and sunny across the country. Daytime temperatures will rise slightly, but overall the weather will remain relatively cool.
If any health issues arise, the department urges people to seek medical attention promptly. Elderly individuals and those with heart conditions are advised to take extra precautions.
