TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan High Speed Rail Co. reported possible train delays due to a series of earthquakes in Chiayi on Thursday morning.
The tremors caused rockslides along Alishan Highway, closing the road in both directions, CNA reported. Authorities stated that the road is now open to single-lane, two-way traffic.
The closure affected nine train services, THSRC said. The company activated its contingency procedures to inspect routes and facilities. Trains passing through the affected areas will operate at reduced speeds, leading to possible delays from Nangang to Kaohsiung stations.
The Central Weather Administration confirmed five earthquakes occurred between 10:11 a.m. and 10:21 a.m. in Chiayi County’s Dapu Township, with magnitudes ranging from 3.2 to 5.6. The strongest tremor, with an intensity of level 5, was recorded in Chiayi County.
