TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck Tainan at 3:16 p.m. on Thursday, with a depth of 10.6 km, according to the Central Weather Administration.
The epicenter was located 49.1 km east-northeast of Tainan City Hall. The strongest tremors were felt in Chiayi County, where the intensity reached level 5.
Taiwan’s intensity scale ranges from 1 to 7, with higher numbers indicating stronger quakes. Tainan and Kaohsiung recorded an intensity level 4.
Intensity level 3 was reported in Chiayi City and Yunlin, while Nantou, Pingtung, Hualien, Changhua, Taichung, Taitung, and Penghu experienced level 2. The lowest intensity, level 1, was observed in Miaoli.
At 3:54 p.m., an aftershock of magnitude 3.8 occurred with a depth of 10.6 km. The epicenter was located approximately 49 km east-northeast of Tainan City Hall.
The strongest shaking was recorded in Tainan at intensity level 4, with Chiayi County at level 3, Kaohsiung and Yunlin at level 2, and Chiayi City experiencing the weakest shaking at level 1.
Earlier in the day, Chiayi County’s Dapu Township experienced five earthquakes between 10:11 a.m. and 10:21 a.m., with magnitudes ranging from 3.2 to 5.6. The strongest of these tremors also reached intensity level 5 in Chiayi County, according to the CWA.
