TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A Kaohsiung contractor was arrested for allegedly killing a worker over an unpaid NT$3,000 (US$91) wage dispute, police said Saturday.
The suspect, a 51-year-old man surnamed Shih (施), reportedly pawned the victim’s valuables before fleeing. Police apprehended him Friday in Nantou, per CNA.
Shih admitted to fatally stabbing 61-year-old Fang (方) with a fruit knife. Authorities are continuing to investigate the case.
Fang was last seen leaving his residence Monday, according to Nanzih Precinct Chief Chen Yi-liang (陳奕良). His family filed a missing person report Tuesday.
Shih allegedly picked up Fang in an SUV, as shown by surveillance footage and phone records. He then reportedly attacked Fang at an abandoned house in Fengshan District and drove to Pingtung.
Chen stated that Shih had promised to pay Fang before the Lunar New Year, but investigations revealed he was in financial distress and pursued by loan sharks. After the crime, he allegedly pawned Fang’s gold jewelry for over NT$200,000 (US$6,071) and went into hiding, frequently changing vehicles to evade capture.
Bloodstains were found in Shih's SUV and an abandoned house. Fang's body was discovered in the mountains of Pingtung's Manzhou Township at 9:15 p.m. on Friday.
