TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu (徐熙媛), known to her fans as "Big S" (大S), has died at age 48.
At noon on Sunday, a Facebook page for Taiwanese traveling in Japan announced that a major Taiwanese celebrity had died in Japan from influenza complications. On Monday, her younger sister, Dee Hsu (徐熙娣), better known as Little S (小S), released a statement through her agent confirming that her sister had passed away, per CNA.
Little S said that her sister had died from influenza-related pneumonia during a family trip to Japan during the Lunar New Year holiday. Little S said she was grateful to her sister for a lifetime of memories and closed with the English words "together remember forever.”
In 1994, Big S and Little S formed the girl group "S.O.S." (Sisters of Shu), per EBC News. In 1996, the sisters began hosting the variety show “Guess Guess Guess Guess,” before joining the long-running show “100% Entertainment" in 1998.
In 2001, Big S rose to fame for playing the lead role of Shancai in the TV series Meteor Garden. That same year, she was nominated for the Best Actress Award at the 36th Golden Bell Awards.
Big S continued to develop her career in the entertainment industry starring in many films and TV series. In 2012, she won Best Actress at the Macau International Movie Festival for her role as Wen Yan in the film Croczilla.
She was featured on TC Candler's list of “The 100 Most Beautiful Faces of 2012.”
Big S is survived by her husband South Korean musician Koo Jun-yup (DJ Koo), as well as a 10-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son, whom she had with former Chinese husband Wang Xiaofei (汪小菲).
