TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Pingtung County Government has launched a mobile rabies vaccination program for dogs and cats, with stops in Xinyuan, Majia, Wandan, and Chunri townships.
The Pingtung County Animal Disease Control Center reported that rabies cases have been detected in 12 townships, including six incidents involving infected ferret-badgers. Rabies is a zoonotic disease with a 100% fatality rate once symptoms appear, per CNA.
To protect pets from infection, authorities will hold 30 public vaccination sessions throughout February. Pet owners can also visit veterinary hospitals to receive rabies vaccinations.
According to the Prevention and Control of Animal Infectious Diseases Act, all dogs, cats, minks, raccoons, and other carnivorous pets older than three months must receive an annual rabies vaccine. Failure to comply may result in fines ranging from NT$30,000-150,000 (US$909-4,540).
The Pingtung County Animal Disease Control Center also offers free rabies vaccinations for registered and microchipped pets on the last Wednesday of each month, from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Pet owners can find more information on the center’s website or call 08-7224109.
Officials urge the public to avoid contact with wild animals and to refrain from abandoning pets in the wild. If scratched or bitten by a suspected rabid animal, individuals should immediately wash the wound with soap and water for 15 minutes, disinfect with iodine, and seek medical attention.
For injured or deceased wild animals, residents should contact the local animal disease control center. Keeping a safe distance from potentially rabid animals is the best way to protect both pets and humans.
