TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — TPP acting chair Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) said his party aims to elect members to Taiwan’s six largest city councils and Hsinchu in 2026 while declining to rule out running for New Taipei mayor.
In an interview with Pop Radio on Monday, Huang said the TPP aims to elect at least three candidates to the councils of Taiwan's six major municipalities and Hsinchu. If successful, this would increase the party’s representation at the county level or above by at least seven members.
Of the six major municipalities, the TPP has members on the New Taipei, Taipei, and Taichung city councils. It also has members on the Hsinchu (county and city), Changhua, Yunlin, and Nantou councils.
Asked if he would run for New Taipei mayor if the TPP agreed with the KMT, Huang said, “I myself would not rule it out, not at all.” He also noted that he is the TPP member responsible for constituents in the city as a list legislator and said he has worked hard for the area.

Huang also lashed out at the DPP and President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) for recall submissions against 19 KMT legislators on Monday. He said he hoped Lai would clarify his position on the recall campaigns as DPP chair after a party meeting tomorrow.
On Sunday, Huang said in Yunlin that the TPP hoped to increase its grassroots talents and put more members in local government, per CNA. He followed that on Monday by confirming the TPP would stand candidates in Yilan in 2026.
Huang said that Chen Wan-hui (陳琬惠) would likely be the party’s nominee for the county magistrate position, though this would be confirmed later. He added that he hoped the TPP would establish a caucus in the Yilan County Council.
Chen ran for the position in 2022 and won just under 7% of the vote, while Yilan Magistrate Lin Tzu-miao (林姿妙) of the KMT was elected with over 50% of the vote. Lin was sentenced to 12 years in prison for corruption last year, though she maintains her innocence.
