TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A gas explosion at Far Eastern New Century’s (FENC) Xinpu factory in Hsinchu County early Thursday has resulted in two fatalities and multiple injuries, the company confirmed.
The explosion occurred at 2:53 a.m. due to an insulation pipeline leak at the polyester cotton plant. The fire was extinguished by 3:30 a.m., and authorities are investigating the cause of the gas leak, per CNA.
FENC reported that 21 individuals were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment, with two confirmed deaths. Five individuals remain in critical condition, while 14 sustained minor injuries.
The company is currently assessing damage to the plant and equipment. The affected polymer production unit has a daily output of 160 tonnes, but FENC stated the incident is not expected to significantly impact overall production or operations.
FENC also confirmed that the facility is fully insured and does not anticipate major financial or business disruptions from the explosion.
The company expressed deep sorrow over the accident, extending condolences to the victims' families. It pledged full support to affected employees and their families during this difficult time and apologized to the public for any concerns caused by the incident.
