TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The multisport World Masters Games to be held in Taiwan in May has attracted over 33,000 registered athletes.
At a Wednesday press conference marking the 100-day countdown, chief organizer Lin Che-hung (林哲宏) said this year is not only Taiwan’s first time hosting the event but also the first time it will be held in Asia, per CNA. The international competition, held every four years, had its last iteration in 2017 in Auckland, New Zealand.
Lin said the games will feature 35 sports across 69 venues in six cities and counties. He added that over 33,000 athletes from more than 100 countries have signed up, with approximately 23,000 having completed their payments.
Compared to the Olympics and Universiade, which have around 10,000 athletes, the games are the world’s largest multi-sport international event, Lin said.
Taipei Department of Information and Tourism explained that anyone aged 30 and above can participate, with no upper age limit, per UDN. Competitors can register individually or form teams with athletes from different countries.
Additionally, foreign residents in Taiwan with an ARC are eligible for the same registration fee as Taiwanese, which is NT$3,600 (US$109). Each registration allows participation in up to three sports and seven competition events.
The games will take place from May 17-30, with registration closing on Feb 17. More information can be found here.
