TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taichung’s environmental protection bureau issued a red alert for poor air quality on Thursday.
The bureau said in a press release the alert was issued at 1 p.m. as the air quality was worse than expected. It said that an easterly wind and unfavorable atmospheric conditions have worsened localized pollution.
A red alert indicates the air quality is unhealthy for all groups and will have more serious impacts on those with health conditions. Children and those with health issues are advised to avoid going out or to wear masks if they do, and others should stay indoors if they experience discomfort.
The bureau noted that air pollution recorded at Taichung’s Dali, Shalu, Xitun, and Zhongming monitoring stations was among the worst in the city. It said the city would dispatch personnel to monitor illegal fires, sources of dust, and traffic pollution.
The bureau added the Taichung Power Plant and manufacturer Dragon Steel have been instructed to intensify efforts to reduce emissions. Taichung City Government said citizens should pay attention to the air quality when going out and follow authorities' recommendations to reduce pollution.
