TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taichung City Government said Thursday the Central Taiwan Lantern Festival will be held from Saturday until Feb. 23 at Taichung Central Park.
The city’s Tourism and Travel Director Chen Mei-hsiu (陳美秀) said the event is expected to attract 4 million visitors and generate NT$9 billion (US$288 million), per CNA.
The main lantern for this year’s event features a 12-meter-tall, 20-meter-long Nuwa, the goddess with a human face and a snake’s body, symbolizing the Year of the Snake. Chen said that "Nuwa" is Taiwan’s first movable lantern.
Chen said the event features nine themed lantern zones, each showcasing a unique design. It also combines lighting, sound effects, and augmented reality for an immersive experience.
Meanwhile, the "love lantern zone” features 29 romance-themed lanterns. The government has also partnered with the city’s Lecheng Temple to build a 5-meter-tall lantern of Yue Lao, a god of love.
Taichung, known as the “hot pot and grilled meat city,” has also set up a “hot pot and barbecue lantern zone.” The city government additionally hopes its marine life lanterns raise awareness about ocean conservation.
During the event, the city government will offer free shuttle bus services, with routes from Taichung MRT’s City Hall Station to Taichung Central Park Station and from MRT Songzhu Station to Taichung Central Park Station. The first shuttle departs at 4:30 p.m., and the last shuttle leaves at 10:30 p.m.
