TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement will deport fugitive Johanne Liou (劉喬安) to Taiwan next month, reports said Saturday.
Liou shot to fame in Taiwan for her participation in the 2014 Sunflower protests, even though she did not play a leading role in the movement. She was later accused of running a prostitution ring and left Taiwan in 2019.
The ICE website said she had been arrested in the state of Massachusetts on Jan. 23. It said she was wanted for “embezzlement, criminal conversion, fraud, and felony drug trafficking,” though ICE mistakenly added she was “wanted in China,” instead of in Taiwan.
Prosecutors in New Taipei, Taoyuan, and Shilin had issued separate arrest warrants for Liou, covering five cases related to illegal drugs and fraud, the Liberty Times reported. After arriving in the US in May 2019, she failed to leave in August of that year, overstaying her visa and traveling around the country.
The Criminal Investigation Bureau reportedly found Liou’s posts on social media and passed the information on to US law enforcement to track her down. She is being held in the custody of the ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston Field Office, with the deportation procedure expected to take four to six weeks.
