TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan Railway Corporation announced that it is set to hire 699 employees this year, CNA reported on Sunday.
This year's recruitment saw 5,447 applicants, a 1,865 decrease compared to 2024.
Five hundred sixty-five individuals participated in a physical fitness test for recruitment on Sunday. The written exam is scheduled for Feb. 23, followed by interviews on March 30.
Participants in the test were required to complete a 40-meter shuttle run while carrying weights. Men carried 35-45 kilograms, while women carried 30- 40 kg.
Recruitment for entry-level positions offers monthly salaries ranging from NT$36,140 (US$1,204) to NT$43,810. Applicants with at least a high school diploma are eligible and will also receive performance bonuses and travel discounts, per Yahoo News.
TRC said this recruitment prioritizes electrical and mechanical positions, particularly in the eastern region. However, it faces challenges as many qualified candidates opt for higher-paying roles in private enterprises.
Lin Yu-che (林佑哲), a section chief of the Taiwan Railway Labor Union, proposed lowering eligibility requirements for physically demanding entry-level positions to help increase manpower.
As of June, Taiwan Railway had 1,055 retirements. In response, it aimed to recruit and hire 936 people, but only 756 candidates were selected, and 672 ultimately reported for duty.
