TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – New UK envoy Ruth Bradley-Jones praised Taiwan for its efforts to promote offshore wind energy.
In her first public appearance since taking over the British Office Taipei on Monday, Bradley-Jones hosted the UK Carbon Trust and Environment Minister Peng Chi-ming (彭啓明) at a discussion of public participation in wind energy projects, per CNA. Taiwan is reducing its dependence on oil while creating job opportunities and strengthening its energy security, she said.
Bradley-Jones said that in the continents where she served as a diplomat during the past 20 years, climate change was always an important concern. Foreign Secretary David Lammy is integrating the issue into the core of his foreign policy, she said.
Taiwan is on the way to becoming the fifth major wind energy hub in the world, serving as an example for the region, she said. As the UK began developing wind energy several years earlier than Taiwan, it has experiences to share and advice to raise public participation in the energy policy, the new envoy said.
