TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Economic Affairs will promote a low-carbon transformation program for Taiwan's industrial sector, CNA reported on Wednesday.
The ministry will invest NT$510 million (US$ 16.6 million) to support businesses in process improvements, energy conversion, and other initiatives. It aims to reduce carbon emissions by more than 330,000 tonnes in sectors including petrochemicals, textiles, paper, and cement.
The ministry estimates the petrochemical industry will reduce carbon emissions by more than 160,000 tonnes, followed by the textile sector with over 80,000 tonnes. The paper industry is projected to cut emissions by more than 20,000 tonnes, and the cement sector by more than 70,000 tonnes.
The two-year transformation program allows businesses to apply individually or in collaboration with other companies. The application deadline is set for March 3.
The ministry pledged to continue driving industrial transformation to achieve net-zero carbon emissions. This includes creating a smart energy management platform, promoting green energy, and expanding the circular economy.
The environment ministry released carbon fee guidelines and voluntary carbon reduction plans under the Climate Change Response Act. Power, gas supply, and manufacturing companies emitting 25,000 tonnes or more of greenhouse gases annually are required to pay carbon fees by the end of May of the following year.
The economic ministry added that Taiwan's export-oriented industries must adopt low-carbon transformation plans to align with the global shift toward low-carbon products.
