TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — National Chung Shan Institute of Science and Technology invited private manufacturers to participate in joint sea trials against its Kuai Chi unmanned surface vehicle prototype in June.
The trials will evaluate nine key metrics, including remote control capabilities, payload capacity, and maritime performance, Liberty Times reported. NCSIST plans to collaborate with private industry to deliver the highest standard attack USV for the military.
Sources familiar with the matter said the Kuai Chi project is transparent and open to integrating the best technologies. The military has commissioned the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology to develop kamikaze USVs under the Kuai Chi project.
NCSIST hopes to complete combat evaluations by the end of the year and begin mass production by 2026. The Army is considering purchasing over 200 USVs to enhance its maritime strike capabilities.
The Kuai Chi project costs approximately NT$810 million (US$24.9 million).
