TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan may showcase its latest military hardware during the live-fire portion of the Han Kuang 41 exercise this summer.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the 38 M1A2T Abrams tanks Taiwan received in December could be included in the drills if their training schedule aligns with the annual military exercise, per Liberty Times.
Conversion training for the tanks is currently underway at the Armored Training Command in Hukou Township, Hsinchu County. All armored personnel must undergo comprehensive retraining, covering tank performance, maintenance, and safety protocols, with hand signals and flag communication being the only exceptions.
Before formally entering service, the tanks will undergo further integration with operational plans and testing.
Additionally, the domestically developed Kuai Chi kamikaze drone boats, designed by the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST), are expected to make an appearance at Han Kuang 41. However, military officials declined to provide further details.
The unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) are slated for sea trials in June, with NCSIST aiming to begin mass production by 2026. The Army is considering acquiring over 200 USVs to enhance maritime strike capabilities.
This year’s live-fire segment of Han Kuang 41 has been extended to 10 days to bolster Taiwan’s ability to counter Chinese threats and gray-zone tactics. The military will focus on logistics resupply, communication restoration, and military-civilian cooperation throughout the exercise.
