TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwanese actor Darren Wang (王大陸) was detained on Tuesday on suspicion of evading military service.
Wang, 33, who gained fame for his role in “Our Times,” is suspected of using forged medical records to avoid conscription, per UDN. Prosecutors and police searched his residence and questioned 10 individuals, including members of an intermediary group and other conscripts allegedly involved in military service evasion.
The New Taipei District Prosecutors Office, in coordination with the Criminal Investigation Bureau and the Yonghe Police Precinct, launched an investigation into illegal military service exemptions. At 9 a.m. Tuesday, officers searched Wang’s residence on Fuxing South Road in Taipei’s Daan District and took him into custody for questioning.
Authorities also detained three members of the intermediary group and seven conscripts suspected of evading military service. Wang was later transferred to the New Taipei District Prosecutors Office for further questioning in the afternoon.
Local media reports alleged that Wang and other conscripts paid millions to a professional group to fabricate illnesses and obtain fraudulent medical diagnoses to avoid military service. However, prosecutors have declined to comment on the case at this time.
