TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) on Monday urged Canada to support Taiwan’s bid for membership in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
Speaking at a banquet for Canadian Senator Michael MacDonald, co-chair of the Canada-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group, Lin expressed hope that Canada’s backing would strengthen the economic partnership between the two nations and contribute to building “a resilient and reliable non-red supply chain.”
Lin thanked MacDonald for his consistent support of Taiwan, citing his advocacy through speeches, joint statements, and social media. He also acknowledged MacDonald’s introduction of the Canada-Taiwan Relations Framework Act, which has fostered bilateral cooperation in areas such as public health, technology, Indigenous affairs, and digital governance.
The foreign minister highlighted Canada’s growing security engagement in the region, noting that Canadian naval vessels have transited the Taiwan Strait six times in the past two years as part of efforts to uphold freedom of navigation and support a free and open Indo-Pacific.
Taiwan and Canada share fundamental values of freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, Lin said. “We cherish this deep friendship and look forward to working together in more areas to promote regional peace and global prosperity,” he added.
