TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Thailand Trade and Economic Office in Taiwan said Wednesday its government was actively fighting cross-border fraud rings to guarantee the safety of foreign visitors.
The statement followed the announcement by Taiwan’s Ministry of Interior on Friday that it would name Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos as high-risk destinations because of their role in hosting fraud rings. The ministry said it would also ask airlines to print warnings for e-tickets to those countries.
The Thai office said its government had toughened up its measures against scammers since February, noting the Southeast Asian country welcomed 35 million visitors last year. Thailand had cut off power and oil supply to areas run by fraud rings in Myanmar on the Thai border, per CNA.
The measures would make international visitors feel safer. The Thai office advised Taiwanese planning a trip to Thailand to talk to friends familiar with the local situation.
The 150,000 Taiwanese believed to be living in the Southeast Asian country could also provide suggestions about travel conditions, the office said.
Myanmar freed 260 foreigners from a scam center last week, including seven Taiwanese. Five of them had returned home after interviews by Thai police.
