TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Taoyuan Airport Mass Rapid Transit system will welcome its 200 millionth passenger during the weekend instead of in March because of the success of the Taoyuan Lantern Festival, reports said Thursday.
The service had expected to hit the landmark number in March on the eighth anniversary of its launch, per CNA. However, visitors to the Lantern Festival hosted by Taoyuan have used the Airport MRT to reach the event.
As a result, the 200 millionth passenger can be expected to be found by Feb. 23, the final day of the festival. The winner will receive a public transport ticket valid for 12 months for Taoyuan, New Taipei, Taipei, and Keelung, as well as a bag with presents valued at NT$20,000 (US$610).
The five travelers before and the five after will receive a similar ticket for two months and a lucky bag. Taoyuan Metro will also mark the occasion by handing the 11 passengers a one-day ticket dubbed “Happy Peach!” as Taoyuan means “peach garden.” The ticket must be used before Jan. 1, 2027.
