TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Everyone should have the day off on May 1 for Labor Day and on Sept. 28 for Teachers’ Day, lawmakers from all three main political parties said Friday.
At present, only workers can take May Day off, while schools are still open. Confucius’ birthday, Sept. 28, is marked as Teachers’ Day with ceremonies at Confucian temples.
The National Federation of Teachers Unions on Friday called a news conference to emphasize that both days should be holidays for all, no matter what their professional background. Legislators from the DPP, the KMT, and the TPP attended the event to express their support.
In response, the Cabinet said it would listen to all sides, make an evaluation, and come to a fair decision, per CNA. The supporters of making the two days official holidays said the current situation amounted to chaos, with members of the same family being separated because some had to work while others could stay home on the same day.
