TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Lantern Festival in Taoyuan was expected to draw 2 million visitors on Saturday, the first day of its final weekend.
Despite the large crowds, the Taoyuan City Government said public transportation was handling the influx smoothly, per CNA. Adjustments to traffic planning ensured that transit systems could accommodate festivalgoers.
On the Airport MRT line, train intervals were reduced to five minutes, preventing overcrowding and long wait times. The improvements were a response to earlier transportation issues when the festival first opened on Feb. 15, attracting 2.2 million visitors and overwhelming public transit. At the time, some travelers were forced to wait for over an hour before finding a train with available space.
To address the surge in attendance, Taoyuan authorities adjusted train schedules while also considering the estimated 210,000 passengers traveling to Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. Additionally, special shuttle buses transported 12,000 visitors to and from the festival on Saturday alone, with a total of 30,000 expected by the end of the night.
The Taiwan High-Speed Rail system also reported no major congestion related to festival travel. Officials advised visitors to purchase return tickets in advance, and additional train services were scheduled to accommodate the increased demand, CNA reported.
