TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) reported on Monday that its international student enrollment surpassed 1,700 last year.
According to the Ministry of Education, degree-seeking international students account for 12.05% of NTNU’s student population, making it the national university with the highest percentage of international students in Taiwan, per CNA.
NTNU President Wu Cheng-chih (吳正己) attributed the university’s success in attracting foreign students to its focus on bilingual education, talent recruitment, and an internationalized campus, per a press release. He said these strategies have helped create a strong learning environment and support system for international students, furthering NTNU’s reputation in global education.
In response to global competition and Taiwan’s declining birth rate, NTNU has actively promoted bilingual education. The university has launched six undergraduate and 62 graduate-level all-English programs, in addition to offering 886 English-taught courses.
The school’s Mandarin Training Center, established in 1956, is the largest and most well-known Mandarin teaching institution in Taiwan. In 2024, it enrolled over 5,000 students from more than 90 countries.
Looking ahead, NTNU said it plans to expand interdisciplinary collaborations and improve student life and career support services to enhance its appeal to international students.
