TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Kaohsiung’s Shoushan Zoo announced three capybara newborn pups will be introduced to the public at a meet-and-greet event on March 1.
The zoo said the pups were born during the Lunar New Year holiday. Mother Liya (莉亞) and father Rui Rui (芮芮) were paired for one year before producing the three pups: Lima (莉馬), Lila (莉拉), and Lisong (莉松).
Liya showed strong maternal instincts, hiding her pups whenever strangers approached. Rui Rui also kept guard silently, per a press release.

Capybaras are known for being compatible with most animal species, as they are herbivores and have few enemies. They are social and docile and mix easily with turtles, monkeys, and chickens.
Shoushan Zoo said zookeepers will care for the capybaras so they grow healthy and strong. A special event for the capybara pups is planned for March 1 at 2 p.m. Zookeepers will discuss the characteristics of capybaras and allow the public to visit the pups for the first time.
In addition, the zoo introduced a miniature donkey foal. The mother, Hua Hua (花花), was separated from male Shrek (史瑞克), though a zookeeper decided to pair the two together and they reportedly fell in love.
Also during the Lunar New Year, a miniature donkey foal, Peng Peng (澎澎), was born with a gentle and lovable personality. To celebrate the park's new additions, from Feb. 28 to March 2, visitors who check in on Facebook or Instagram with photos of capybaras or miniature donkeys are entitled to a free meal upgrade or a buy-one-get-one-free deal at select restaurants and cafes in the zoo.
