TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei Veterans General Hospital was ranked 208th on US Newsweek's World’s Best 250 Hospitals list, CNA reported on Thursday.
Launched in 2019 by Newsweek in collaboration with global data platform Statista, the list evaluates more than 2,400 hospitals across 30 regions. Rankings are based on surveys of thousands of medical experts, patient experience data, and hospital quality metrics.
Taipei Veterans General Hospital Director Chen Wei-ming (陳威明) said the hospital has invested more than NT$15 billion (US$491.8 million) on infrastructure development and digital transformation. This includes the nation's first Heavy Ion Therapy Center for cancer treatment, a new outpatient and surgery building, and new dormitories.
The US National Cancer Institute also established its first overseas laboratory there to conduct cancer treatment research.
Hospitals ranked higher on the list are mostly from Europe and the US. Chen said Taiwan's hospitals are possibly underrated in the rankings and that more local hospitals should be included on the list.
The hospital conducts more than 500 clinical trials annually. Its research outcomes have received certification from the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs for eight consecutive years.
The hospital also established the heart failure clinical trial alliance and a cancer clinical trial alliance. The two groups will continue to lead 10 medical institutions in Taiwan to develop more advanced medical treatments.
In 2023, Taiwanese hospitals were included in the rankings for the first time, with National Taiwan University Hospital entering the list at 249th. Last year, the Taipei Veterans General Hospital ranked 218th and was the only Taiwanese hospital included.
