TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of the Environment said Thursday that air quality in western Taiwan is poor.
As of 2 p.m., air quality at 35 monitoring stations in the region reached a red alert level. The east has good air quality, while the north is under an orange to red alert, and areas south of Taichung are under a red alert, per CNA.
The ministry said the poor air quality was partly caused by pollution from China's southeastern coast. Offshore islands like Kinmen and Matsu are also experiencing poor air quality.
On Friday, air quality in the north and south regions will be under a red alert, while central Taiwan will be under an orange one. By the weekend, the entire western region is expected to be under an orange alert.
The ministry reminds individuals with respiratory or allergic conditions that an orange alert is unhealthy, while a red alert indicates unhealthy air quality for everyone.
