TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taichung City Police Department launched an ATM anti-fraud awareness program on Monday, posting warnings at convenience stores and banks about recognizing suspicious activity.
Citizens can scan a QR code to report suspicious activity to the second precinct, which will dispatch police to the scene. Those who successfully report fraud cases will receive a reward of NT$5,000 (US$152), per CNA.
Police also increased patrols of locations frequented by crime groups. A task force at Taichung Police Second Precinct will watch surveillance footage and deploy plainclothes officers to ambush fraudsters.
The campaign will also alert the public to be wary of fraudulent characteristics. This includes individuals disguising themselves with hats and masks, making repeated withdrawals on multiple ATM cards, occupying ATMs for a long time, and frequently checking phone messages when withdrawing money.
Taichung Police Second Precinct Captain Chung Cheng-chih (鍾承志) called on the public to be vigilant when receiving calls from strangers about ATM transfers. The public can call the 165 anti-fraud hotline for further assistance.
