TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taipei Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system welcomed its 14 billionth passenger on Saturday, awarding them a free one-year pass.
From its launch in 1996 until November 2023, the system recorded 13 billion rides, per CNA. It took just over a year to reach the next milestone, with the 14 billionth passenger appearing at 10:18 a.m. on Saturday.
The traveler boarded a Wenhu Line train at Nangang Exhibition Center Station and exited at Dahu Park Station. They will receive a ticket granting unlimited free rides for one year.
The five passengers before and after them will receive a TPASS valid for one month, worth NT$1,200 (US$36.53).
Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation thanked the public for its support and encouraged commuters to continue using green transportation to reduce carbon emissions.
