TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taipei District Court has granted former Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) permission to attend his father’s funeral, which will be held on Monday in Hsinchu.
Ko’s wife, Peggy Chen (陳佩琪), appealed to the court so he could fulfill his filial duties following the death of his father, Ko Cheng-fa (柯承發), on Feb. 17. Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) Chairman Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) announced on Sunday that the request had been approved, UDN reported.
The Taipei City Police have requested assistance from Hsinchu City Police for traffic control before, during, and after the event, per UDN. Traffic measures will be in place from 7 a.m. Monday, with the funeral service set to begin at 8:30 a.m. in Hsinchu’s Hsiangshan District.
Ko remains in detention on corruption charges, with his trial set to begin on March 20. His status as a former TPP chairman and presidential candidate makes Monday’s funeral a politically sensitive event.
Several political figures are expected to attend, including former presidents Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) and Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九), as well as TPP leaders and some Kuomintang (KMT) officials. Hsinchu Mayor Kao Hung-an (高虹安), a TPP member facing legal investigations and a recall campaign, is also likely to be present.
Following Huang’s announcement on Sunday, Ko’s supporters are expected to travel from across Taiwan to Hsinchu to show solidarity with the embattled leader.
While large crowds may gather outside the venue, only 1,200 people are expected to attend the funeral. The service is expected to continue into the afternoon, though it remains unclear when Ko will be returned to the detention center in New Taipei’s Tucheng District.
