TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s military has announced airspace control measures ahead of firing exercises scheduled for later this month off the southwest coast of Taiwan.
The drills will take place on March 24, approximately 20 nautical miles off the coast of Kaohsiung and Pingtung. The designated area overlaps with a region where several drifting Chinese vessels have been identified as potential threats, LTN reported.
On March 24, commercial and public activity will be restricted from the ocean surface to an altitude of 1,800 meters. In response to inquiries, the Navy stated that the exercises will not involve live munitions, CNA reported.
Earlier this month, the Ocean Affairs Council identified at least 96 ships drifting in the Taiwan Strait that are funded, owned, or operated by Chinese entities. Of these, two were classified as high threats, while eight were labeled as medium threats, per LTN.
Some of these vessels are suspected of severing undersea internet cables to Taiwan’s outlying islands. At least two Chinese merchant ships, the Baoxun and the Dali, have been drifting for months within the designated exercise zone.
Taiwanese forces will likely use the drills as an opportunity to target the vessels and drive them away.
