TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) has developed the XTR-102A, a twin-barrel electro-optical independent close-in weapon system (CIWS), for the Navy’s planned light frigates.
Each frigate will be equipped with two XTR-102 systems, featuring advanced electro-optical targeting and remote operation capabilities, Liberty Times reported. The system's twin T-75 20 mm cannons can fire between 400 and 1,200 rounds per minute, with a maximum range of 2,000 meters.
The XTR-102 series includes both land-based and ship-based versions, with units already installed on the Coast Guard’s 600-ton patrol vessels.
CSBC Corporation is building two light frigate prototypes—an air defense variant and an anti-submarine warfare variant—under a NT$24.54 billion (US$746.47 million) contract. The Navy plans to produce 10 light frigates to replace its aging Chi Yang-class frigates.
