TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday congratulated Mark Carney on his win in the ruling Liberal Party's leadership election.
The former governor of the Canadian central bank and Bank of England, who is set to become Canada’s 24th prime minister, secured an overwhelming 85.9% of the vote within the Liberal Party, per CNA. In contrast, Cary's closest rival, former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, only received 8%.
Cary, 59, will also be a rare case in Canadian history of a prime minister who is not a sitting member of its parliament.
Amid tariff and annexation threats by US President Donald Trump, Cary said in his acceptance speech on Sunday, “America is not Canada. And Canada never, ever will be part of America in any way, shape or form," per the New York Times. He added, “We didn’t ask for this fight, but Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves.”
In response to a request for comment from CNA on Monday evening, MOFA extended its congratulations on behalf of Taiwan to Carney on his victory.
MOFA said that Taiwan-Canada relations have seen significant progress in recent years, enjoying broad support in Canada. The ministry said it would uphold a balanced approach in maintaining open communication channels with Canada’s major political parties and their leadership while strengthening support for Taiwan across various sectors to grow Taiwan-Canada relations.
